Print Story Multiple IM status

What sense should one make when people are "online" in one IM protocol and "away" in the other; or "offline" in one protocol and "do not disturb" in another; or any other combination of two or three diferent status messages?

(other topics: music, football/soccer, teh obligatory IM poll)


Friends suggested me that it might be just distraction, or that people sometimes want to be "away" from only one of their contacts (ICQ had "Offline to user", but there used to be ways around it, don't know about today's most popular ones).

Damn. The battery of the iPod just ran out, and I left the charger cable at the uni. I was listening to Dramagods, Nuno Bettencourt's (semi-)new band. Recommended. BTW, Extreme's original lineup will reunite for 2 or 3 concerts. How I envy you lucky bastards in the US who'll have the chance to see it.

Tonight, major gathering here in Rio of southernmost-state "expatriates" to have a typical Southern Brazilian barbecue and watch our state's team game in the quarterfinals for the continent's soccer championship. Go Inter!

First, different clients have different timeouts for "auto-away". Second, some clients log out machine A if you log into machine B, while others leave both logged in. Using IM at home and at work, and combining the above two with forgetfulness can produce pretty much arbitrary combinations of statuses.

The thing is I never know how to behave in those cases when I want to talk to people but they are online/away, or free-for-chat/do-not-disturb. I simply don't know anymore who's away and who isn't. I end up picking the protocol in which they're with the "friendliest" status set and send them a "ping" message.
